The town of Belchite in Spain was virtually destroyed in a battle between the victorious General Franco and The Republicans during The Spanish Civil War. At the end of the war in 1939 he declared that the remains of Belchite be left as a reminder to the population of the destruction caused by his enemy, The Republicans. A new town was constructed alongside the remains. General Franco ruled Spain in a dictatorship for 36 years until his death in 1975
Some small effort has been made to shore up a few buildings providing temporary conservation, though given the scale of the site proper conservation would be a huge effort. The buildings are being left to decay.
